CHRYSANTHEMUM EVENING.

BRILIiZANT DISPLAY. MORE THAN* 300 BLOOMS.

A chryjnthemum display was held ; in the Piccadilly Tea Rooms last evening by the Auckland Horticultural Society. This was the first of this year's course of monthly display and lecture : evenings. The number of blooms shown i and the attendance of members and I 1 their friends both proved much larger ; thai) had been expected. Mr. W. .T. Wernham, chairman of tbe I society, welcomed the visitors, and comI plimented. tbe new Chrysanthemum Clan Jon the outstanding merit of the display.

I Short addresses wore delivered by Mr. . F. Bennett and Mr. George Mills on the j development, culture, oare and show qualties of ths chrysanthemum. These 1 were very greatly apprciated. The Fall's Memorial Cup for the best chrysanthemum, blooms displayed at tbe I society's autumn show was presented to Mr. H. Leathart, The chairman also made presentations to Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Wright, who are going on a holiday trip to/England and the Continent. Mr, , Wright, wiio was ope of the foundation mcinhers of the Auckland Horticultural Society, nnd is at present the vice-chair-man, in tends, while he is away, to visit 'nearly all the great horticultural shows of the world, and to bring back much useful information for the benefit of the | members of the saciety. j j The display of chrysanthemums was far superior to anything which the society has staged for years past. There were exhibited over 300 exhibition blooms, the quality of which was of ex- ; ceptional merit. The tables with their | wide range of richly-tinted autumn; blooms presented a very impressive I sight. Varieties which call for special j mention were the White Louisa Packet, i the William Turner (white), Edith Cavill : (bronze), and the Pink Packet. Besides I the chrysanthemums there was also, a ' [ small display of dahlias by tho well- ! I known amateur grower. Mr. H. T. Goldie, I j who has made the cultivation of the dahlia his hobby.
