VARIOUS TICKS.

"STICK TO THEIB HOSIS."

WELL DEFINED SPHERES,

Although the cattle tick—a very -undesirable immigrant by the way—has spread considerably throughout the province, there' does not appear any evidence that birds are affected' by it. There, seems to have been some, doubt ■ on. this point, particularly in the minds of sportsmen who last' season found wild duck affected with some sort of creepy thing. ' The matter was referred to this morning by Mr ; G. Archey, curator of the Auckland Museum, who stated that many birds were tick-infested, and that even the seabirds were not immune. It was certainly not the same variety as the cattle tick, and tjiere.was ample evidence that the creatures stuck to their particular host, and' had well-defined spheres. It was a moot point, how-_ ever, whether the ticks that troubled' birds were all of the same species, and in this connection there was certainly a -■vide field for investigation. * Mr. Archey said fthat in the case of wild birds the ticks were usaully found near the head, this for the reason that the, bird could not Teach' that portion of its body with its beak. , ,_ In conclusion, he added that they would be pleased at the museum to liave any ticks discovered sent forward for identification. The insects should be placed in a small bottle, filled to the extent of about four-fifths with methy- : lated spirit, and. one-fifth of water.
