WOMAN IN THE PULPIT.
IS XT HER PLACE ? THIRD CHAPTER OF GENESIS. A proposal to admit women to tho ministry of the United Free Church of Scotland caused great discussion at the Ecclesiastical Courts in Glasgow last month. Glasgow Presbytery turned down -"he suggestion, after a close vote. The Rev. Boyd Scott, opposing the idea, declared that there was absolutely nothing which would lead them logically or inevitably to open the office of the ministry to. women. Hamilton Presbytery—Hamilton is a few miles from Glasgow—however, approved the proposal by 36 votes to 32. Dr. Knight, of UddingstOn, who seconded an amendment for thd. rejection of the proposal, complimented women on their teaching capabilities, and remarked, amid laughter, that if many women were Ordained soma male ministers Would "hae to sup gey thin kail" (to use* an English colloquialism for a Scottish colloquialism ! — "would have a pretty thin time.") Personally, he was quite willing that wohien should be allowed to teach, but not to preach Or dictate to man. (Laughter) . That prerogative to man, he con-' tended, had come down from the third chapter of Genesis. There are 63 Presbyteries in the United Free Church .of Scotland, and e\j -have a voice on the question of women's admission to the ministry.
