CANTERBURY TURF NOTES.

WAIMATE AND NEW BRIGHTON MEETINGS. IBy Teleuraph.—Special to "Star.'") CHRTSTCHURCH, Friday. The meeting at Waimate yesterday was rairly well attended, but money was scarce, and a rair drop in the totalisator receipts was recorded. The meeting was not a particularly good one. The Studholmo hurdles was a rather uninteresting race. This was mainly due to mishaps during the running. Coastguard was the first to become inconvenienced, through his rider losing an iron at the second hurdle. Then Rory O'More, jumping greenly, attempted to run off at the stands, and in doing so, interfered with Red Admiral, whose rider, Gordon, made a good recovery. Later Rory O'More lert the course, and Red Admiral fell, both being well beaten horses at the time. Coastguard also made a very had jump at the halfmile post. When Red Admiral I'cK the accident was caused through over-reaching. The Vice-Admiral gelding cut himself in front, and will require a few weeks spell. A very poor lot went out to contest the Trial Plate, and the race was confined to place-fillers throughout. Moratorium was made a good favourite, hut after appearing to have the race won, he slopped badly in the last furlong. Reonui, stayed on fairly well, but had Exide kept a straight course, he would have given him a lot of trouble. C. E. Emerson, on Mountain Lion, stole the Waimate Cup rrom his rivals. He was not the first out, but took charge quickly, to steal lengths away at each bend, Fresco was always well up, but did not handle the last bend too well, and railed to survive a brilliant late rifn by Tarloton, and was beaten cleverly for the second position. Mountain Lion, by winning with 9.2, repeated bis performance or last year. Overdrawn was a warm favourite for tho Cup, but like the remainder or the field, lert his run too late to have any chance or overhauling Mountain Lion. Overdrawn was not disgraced, but will have to show a little improvement it he Is to win the Great Autumn Handicap, or any other good race at Riccarton. Sun Up's win in the President's Handicap was made easier by the favourite. Corn Money, being squeezed out at the barrier rise, and meeting with more trouble with half the journey covered. The latter finished well, hut his was an impossible task from tho home turn. Frivolous seemed to he backed from tho right quarter Tor the Waitangl Welter, and when the machine was balanced, only Exlde and Kapuna were hacked to beat her. Frivolous won, with Exide second, but had Kapuna been given any chance at all when the signal to go was given, or had he received a rair run arter he had got going, Frivolous would have had to be satisfied with second money. Exide started twice and finished in the money each time. He would probably he better suited by a longer journey than he tackled on this occasion. Zaagoza wa3 backed as unbeatable in the Steward's Welter. She was a little unlucky in the running, but would have to play second fiddle at any time when Courtly Rose Woe set to meet her. Dancing Days showed all her usual pace, but had to give way at the nnlsh to a better stayer in Courtly Rose. Firteen yearlings were shipped at Timaru Tor Sydney on Wednesday. They were from the Elderslie Stud, and were a very One lot. The finish of the principal event at the New Brighton Trotting Club's meeting:, the Burwood Handicap, was too close to be satisfactory to all concerned, and the public rrom both enclosures made no secret or the fact that they disagreed with the Judge's verdict. Mainly through mistakes at tho start, tho race was practically confined to four horses, and in a desperate finish an (he straight Dillon Wilkes on the extreme outsido, Judge Hancock in the centre, and Talent on the rails, were very close together, and the numbers of Judge Hancock, Talent, and Dillon WUkes were hoisted in that order. Then the noise started, and when the Judge did not alter his placlng3 a demonstration such as is seldom heard on a racecourse, was made by tho crowd for a considerable time arter the race had finished. The crowd continued to show its disapproval. It was one or those unrortunate differences or opinion that occasionally occur between the judgo and the public. The day's racing opened with the Improvers' Handicap, which drew the large field or twenty horses. For three parts or the Journey it was a good race, but at this stage the fleld quickly became strung out, and Elusive, who began well, and was at the head or affairs. Increased his advantage, and won easily by five lengths, in 3.37 1-5, or .7 4-5s better than this handicap. Erin's Royal, a nvc year gelding by Erin's King, rrom Royal Blue, led rrom start to nnish ln the Beirast Handicap, but had to be Tully extended to dispose or Bingen Lad, who put In a good run over the middle mile, and looked like winning. The winner, Erin's Royal, -showed up prominently in a two miles race at Timaru on Saturday only to rade away over the last rour furlongs. On this occasion the distance was a mile and a-hair, and at present this appears as rar as he Is able to go. Bingen Lad, who was one or the outsiders or the field, paced his best race to date. -All started In the Burwood Handicap, and It was one or the most disappointing races seen- on the course ror some time. Harbour Light reared up prior to the start and roll, but eventually was righted, and took his. place In' the field. At the rail or the nag. Fight Ever, St. Maura, and. Fashion Queen refused to begin correctly, while several or tho back-markers were slow in striking their gait. When the field had settled down, the leaders Included Talent, Trenand,- Judge Hancock and Dillon Wilkos, which had closed on the leaders, and the final Issue was confined to this qqartpt. Talent had command over ,tho concluding circuit, and until the last few strides, when Judgo Hsncock finished .strongly under pressure, and the Judge awardod him the verdict over Talent and Dillon .Wilkes by a narrow margin, with Trenand close up fourth. The winner, Judge Hancock, was the only straight out trotter in the field, and it was his second success amongs| the pacers. Talent Showed Improved rorm, as did Dillon ; WHkes.;..\ The effort or Trenand was disappointing, m view or his excellent showing at> Timaru. He was beaten two furlongs from home. The placings of the judge did not llnd ravour with the public, and there was a hostile demonstration ror soyeral minutes after the horses had returned .tp the enclosure. The Seaview Handicap was an interesting race, and the result' was in doubt until a rurlong rrom home, when Nipper, excellently bandied by J. Davidson, gave out a strong challenge, and won nicely rrom Sea pearl, Walrua, Shine -soon and Wild Pigeon. Young Carbine was alWays well placed in the Autumn Handicap, but had to be fully extended to dispose or Queen Ida, which made most or the running, but had nothing lert in reserve at the finish. Koraki trotted a good race into third place. Frisco Beau, which showed speed : in patches, failed to trot evenly. Duke Bingen was always amongst the rront division, and finished firth. In a rair finish ror the Dash Handicap, Ratana won with something ip hand rrom the ravourites. Hydaspes and Berenice, but matters would probably have been changed had Berenice received a good passage in the early stages. The ract or having considerable ground to make up left the latter with not much dash, and at the nnish she only just beat Golden Sun ror third. Waitaki Girl rollowert up her success at fimaru by winning the Wainoni Handicap rrom rourteen others. She began well and racing generously, had the result in sare keeping a long way rrom home. Black Admiral, which looked well, .went a good race and finished second, with Gleaming third. The last-named was given very 30lid support, and he made the early running, but was easily beaten at the finish Arter the placed horses came Loganwood Becky Logan, Ouimet, and Rofcoie. Royal Chance broke soon arter the start. Alto Chimes and Dolly Dillon lost their chances by beginning slowly, while Jack Potts and Onyx were set a task beyond them Unfortunately, the Electric Handicap was robbed or considerable interest when Four Bells fell in the first' furlong and Interfered with several or those behind him whetu, which Began smartly, was in charge at the end or two rurlongs with Dreamalion and Darknite as his nearest attendants The final issue was confined to this trio, and Dreamalion won easintr up by half a dozen lengths from Darknite which outstayed Whetu and annexed second money. Schoolmate ran fourth alter putting in a bad break at the start
