RAILWAY BUSES.
OPENINGS IN BOTH ISLANDS. EDISON STORAGE CAR. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON, this day. The Prime Minister, when questioned by the "Star" correspondent as to plans for the utilisation of .motor omnibuses, for which the Railway Department is calling tenders, stated that before the tenders are accepted he will have the comparative running costs ascertained of motors and the present rail services on a number of branch lines. It is intended to try the experiment of road passenger services, not only along southern branch line routes, but also in the North where there is an equal necessity for such services. An Edison battery storage rail motor has been landed and is now under trial, Mr. Coates also stated, and the most likely prospect for this motor is in the South Island, where there is a supply of cheap electricity. This car has an operating radius of 130 miles.
