REQUIRES RENOVATING.

EXTERIOR OF TOWN HALL. WORK TO BE DONE. The' condition of the exterior of the ' Town Hall was the subject of a report by the city engineer (Mr. W. E. Bush) to the council last evening. Mr. Bush stated that on making an examination he found places where the stone was somewhat eroded. The whole building should be cleaned down, and treated with three coats of raw linseed oil. and where repairs were required | these attended to before treatment, particularly did this apply to the balustrading around the apex portion at Queen Street and Grey Street. This portion seemed to have suffered more than the •majority of the stone in the building and it appeared that probably there were two classes of stone used in construction. He recommended that the balustrading be renewed with either Italian granite or Portland stone, both of which, if tool finished would resemble the colour of the existing stone. Either was very much harder than the Oamaru stone at pre- j I sent esxisting. and would give better ser- ! Ivce in that position of the building. A considerable portion of the cornice" and also other parts of the building, had been defaced by the electricians employed to muminate the Town Hall on "special occasions, and these defects required to be made good. A large portion of the roof of the administrative block needed renewal and painting. He recommended that the ball embellishments on the top of the clock tower be »emoved as th £e was a danger of the balls falling.' were broken and the council should not run any further risk of accident through any portion falling to earth. The work was estimated to cost £2127 17/6. It was decided to do the work and place the amount on next year's estimates.
