QUICKER STEAMING.
NEW AUSTRALIAN SCHEME. UP-TO-DATE SHIPS. LONDON, March 4. The "Daily Express" says it understands that Australia is seeking the approval of the British Government for an important shipping scheme. This aims at speeding up communications. A private group proposes to form a new company with a capital of £10.000,000 and build seven ships of 24,000 tons each designed to make the voyage from Southampton to Fremantle in 25 days. If the scheme is adopted the Commonwealth would give the new company a contract for the carriage of its mails, the transit time for which would be reduced by five days each way as compared with the present P. and O. and Orient services. The company would also carry all emigrants. The proposed route for the service is from Southampton via Genoa, the Suez Canal, Bombay and Colombo. The new ships would have cold storage equipment of the most modern type to enable Australia to compete with South America in the chilled meat trade.—(A. and N.Z.)
