Monday was the time limit for the exchange of lists of challenged votes in connection with the Westland election petition. The exchange was duly made during the day at Greymouth. The list of challenged votes by the petitioner (Mr. J. O'Brien) was handed by his solicitor, Mr. W. J. Joyce, to the solicitor for Mr. T. E. Y. Seddon, while the latter's list was handed over by Mr. Seddon's solicitor. Mr. W. J. Hannan. It is understood (says the Westland correspondent of the Christchurch "Press")that on Mr. O'Brien's behalf there are sixty votes challenged, and that on Mr. Beddon's behalf the number of votes challenged is forty-eight. It is also stated that five votes have been challenged by both sides- The hearing of the petition will take place at Greymouth next Monday at 10 a.m., the judges being Mr. Justice Stringer and Mr. Justice Ostler. It is expected that there will be quite an influx of visitors on account of the numerous witnesses being called by both sides. In addition to the counsel mentioned, Mr. P. J. O'Regan of Wellington, and Mr. J. A. Murdoch, of i tiokitika, have been retained for the petitioner and respondent respectively Severity-five applications have been received for the position of a clerk in the office of the' Waitemata Powei Board. The ages of the applicants range from 17 to 65 years.
