FIRES IN THE COUNTRY.
TWO RESIDENCES DESTROYED,
OLD HOMESTEAD BURNED. (By Telegraph.--Own Correspondent.) PUKEKOHE, this day. Major C. R. Spragge's two-storey residence at Opaheke was burned to the ground at 9.30 this morning. Mrs. Spraggc was the only one at home, and she had a good fire in the kitchen. She left the house for a moment, and, returning, found the kitchen ablaze. It was too late to save anything and many valuables and important documents were destroyed. The origin is believed to have been a defective chimney. About 11 o'clock on Wednesday fire destroyed a ten-roomed residence in Romney Park, Karaka, owned by Mr. E. J. Prendergast, solicitor, of Auckland! It is understood nothing was saved.. The outbreak occurred in the back of the house and. was discovered by the housekeeper. It had a firm hold and practically everything was destroyed. The house was insured in the Commercial Union, and the furniture in the Victoria Insurance Company.
