SERUM FOR SCARLET FEVER.
Another serum has now been definitely added to those ■which are preventive, or curative, or oth, in disease. Scarlet fever is chiefly dangerous because of the "complications" which follow and less frequently accompany it. The new serum is of exceptional value on account of its power to prevent these complications. It is reported to have changed the whole medical situation in relation to the disease. In some districts scarlet fever has assumed a fulminant or severe type, quite different from that of which it was written thirty years ago, "can be best cured by open windows, light diet, and acid infusion of roses." Belfast has had epidemics of late of the severe type, and it is from that city whence comes the news of the effectiveness of the serum. It has been tested in hundreds of cases at the Belfast Corporation Infectious Diseases Hospital. Out of three hundred cases there have been no failures. The period of isolation has been reduced from six weeks to three or less, and the serum promises to be as great in value as diphtheria anti-toxin.
