BAND IONTEST.

THE QUICK STCP COMPETITION

WON BY AUCKLAND ARTILLERY. WOOLSTON WINS CHAMPIONSHIP. SURPRISE IN OPERATIC TEST. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. Quickstep day, Saturday, was ushered in with a steady and continuous downpour of rain, which lasted all day, with only brief intermissions, and converted the Exhibition sports ground into miniature lakes. In spite of the wretched weather, however, a large crowd watched the proceedings. A particularly good performance was put up by the Auckland Artillery, who headed points for drill by 12 points. In music Palraerston North and St. Kilda tied for lirst place with 92 points each. Woolston coming second, one point behind. Wanganui Garrison "went down" in this test, allowing Woolston to pain a lead, which enabled it to secure the New Zealand championship awarded to the A grade band attaining the most points in the two test selections and music of the quickstep. In the evening the "own choice" operatic selection (open to all bands) was decided, 10 bands competing. Queen Alexandra's Own (Wanganui) sprang a surprise on everyone in this test by winning comfortably with five points to spare. A peculiar feature of this test was the fact that every band with the exception of Wansramii Garrison selected a Wasrner opera as its offerins. The winner crave a very brilliant performance of "Tristan and TsoHe." Woolston. the runner-up, playing "Parsifal." Waneanui Garrison pave a very fine performance of Swift's arrangement of "William Toll." but apparently failed to anneal to the judTe on this occasion, as the band was only placed fourth, seven points behind the winners.
