A BAD START.

THEFT BY TBAVEIiLEB. REMANDED FOR SENTENCE.. A young man, Leslie Greenfield, appeared before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., .at the Police Court this' morning when he pleaded guilty to nine charges of having failed to account to hia employers, C. H. Furness and Company, for various sums of money totalling £23 9/10. It was stated by Chief Detective Cummings that Greenfield wag a single man who only arrived in Ne\r Zealand from England two years ago. On December 7 last he commenced duties with C. H. Furnesa and Co. as town traveller at a salary of £6 per week. Five days later he received a sum of j money on behalf of the firm and conI verted it to his o-wn use. On eight other occasions he collected sums of money which he also kept. Accused receipted the invoice instead of giving an official j receipt, and always told the customers j who paid him that the receipt would be j forwarded later. • Greenfield had not i made one penny restitution. At the I present time he owed about £60 to other people. "He had a good job. but started to steal a, few days after he took up the position, and has had a j good time at .the expense of the firm," ' added Mr. Cummings. The accused was remanded for sen. tence on Friday next.
