TELEPHONE IMPROVEMENTS.
OPENING NEW CIRCUITS. NEEDS OF PAPATOETOE. An early improvement to the telephone service to Papatoetoe and to the district beyond Pukekohe, which includes the township of Tuakau, is promised by the Post and Telegraph Department: Papatoetoe has. been recognised for some time as a weak point in the system, and the rapid growth of the district during the past twelve months has made the call for additional facilities an urgent one. These will be provided by the erection of an additional wire, which has just been authorised, tl is expeected that the work will be done, during the next two or three monfhs. With only one direct wire serving Papatoetoe, as at present, the experience | of residents, and particularly the busi- | ness community, has frequently been an exasperating one. Several users have complained that the only way to get reasonable dispatch was by an urgent call, which meant double rates. Tuakau's bureau requirements are served by Pukekohe. which has four direct wires to Auckland. Another wire is now being erected, and it is hoped that this will do much to relieve the position at stations immediately south of Pukekohe. Important improvements have latelybeen made to the telephone service north of Auckland; and four new circuits serving the whole of Auckland peninsula have been opened since Christmas. The principal towns affected by this extension are Whanparei, Helensville. Dargaville and Russell.
