WOOLLEN WOOL PACK.
TRIALS IN VICTORIA. NOT SO STURDY AT JUTE. MELBOURNE, February 12. A test of the suitability of the woolpack which is favoured by the Bradford I Chamber of Commerce was carried out lin a Melbourne wool store. The pacK was subjected to dumping and handling treatment as is customary with the jute I wool-pack. The woollen pack is of an attractive appearance, and it weighs only 61b or 71b, against the 111b weight of the jute pack. The opinions expressed by the wool trade were that the woollen packs, as a j result of the test, stretched appreciably, J and it was considered that by the time j the wool baled in them reached the sea- | board from the sheep stations the packs would be out of shape. Consequently it would be impossible to stack them in the brokers' warehouses three or four bales practice which is essential in the economical working of stores. The dumping test also disclosed that the woollen pack lost its shape under this process. This would interfere with smooth working , at the stores, and would involve difficulties in respect to loading bales to advantage in ships' holds. ' Another objection to the woollen packs j which was taken by the trade was the I window cutting for showing wool, which was necessary to conform) to the rules of the wool buyers. It had been shown that the packs had elasticity, and difficulty would be experienced in sewing them up again satisfactorily. The cost of the woollen packs would also prejudice their adoption. Bradford interests were willing to pay the growers who used this class of pack an additional halfpenny per lb for their wool, but only a minor portion of Australian wool found it 3 way into their hands.— (A. and N.Z.)
