Pac-rna . —The man who d<u that i'inelli would =■•■; a pla<'«> win-, -he was placed iwith Ninrumpoopi third. Alfort showed up in his engagements at Takapuiia. and it should not be long before he is seen to better ad\antage. He is bard to dispose of when properly right, and it looks as though lie is again returning to form.

TTorsPs trained by F. Lonmh were in £nnri form at the Takapuna meeting. He '-yon the Tup with Depert (Mow and finished second in the Takapuna Ilandirap with the same horse, while Black f ruiser and Rippling won the hurdle rafes on Saturday's programme.

Phaola. the Avondale Stakes winner, was produced at the Takapuna meeting. but tailed to set into a place in either of her engagement-. She looked as though she required some racing, and when she is right she is sure to keep the opposition busy, for she showed up in the early stages.

When raeinp at the Thames meeting, the two-yvar-old Baby Bun by Some P>oy 11. showed a lot of upeed. for half-a-mile. That «a* her first race, and her next appearance uas at Takapuna last Thursday, when she ran Tea Bell to a nerk in the Calliope Handicap. Though a bit -r.ial! thero is no doubt Baby Bun is a very smart youngster.

Desert Glow looked very fit when produced at Devonport last week, and won the Takapuna Cup in good style, while on Saturday he was only beaten by a neck in the Takapuna Handicap. In the spring Desert Cllow ran second in the Mitehetson Cup. one mile and a half, vrhile he dead-heated with Muraahi in the Hamilton Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at the Waikato meeting.

Auruniavis won a douhle at the Bay of Islands meeting recently held at "VVhangarei. She waa accepted for in the Trial Handicap the first day of the Takapuna meeting, but she did not start. On Saturday she was produced on two occasions, finishing out of a place in the Moana Handicap, seven furlongs, and winning the Hack Handicap, one mile and a furlong, later in the day. She rushed to the front about six furlongs from home and none of the others got near her.

Killute has failed to stay on in his previous engagements over seven furlongs, and has just proved good enough to get beaten into third place. He has won at five and a half furlongs. In the Trial Handicap at Takapuna last week he was ridden by R. Reed, who got him home by a short head in front of Luxurious and Appellant. His trainer, J. Lambess. deserves a bit of luck for he has expended a lot of patience on the son of Kilboy. Killute is well enough bred for anything for his dam Salute threw, among others, that useful pair Arch Salute and First Salute.

Toivn Bank ran third in a field of three which, contested the Clifford Plate one mile and a half at the Auckland summer mpeting. but there were two pood ones in front of him. Count Cavour and Rapine However, he wa.= not very far away at. the finish, and this performance evidently appealed to many for he was well supported in the Takapuna Cup. He looked well and ran well, but failed to concede Desert Glow 1 lib. On Saturday he was again made third favourite for the Takapuna Handicap, but was again beaten. The going was a bit too hard for him for he is not altogether a sound horse.

Appellant performed well at Takapuna. On the first day he dead-heated for second place with Luxurious, and on Saturday won the Moana Handicap in pood style. He was well handled by R. Reed in the latter event, for he was always in a good position, and. as the tield swung out crossing the top. Reed shot Appellant up on the inside, and he won easily. He is by Westcourt, and was purchased hy Mr. Ernest Alison in .Australia at the time he secured Oration and others. This was Appellant's first victory, and though lie maXes a noise when galloping it looks as though he will win other races. The racing he had on the first day evidently improved him for he looked well when he paraded on Saturday.

The total sura to be paid away in connection with the recent summer meeting of the Takapuna Jockey Club amounts to £7325. The following is a list of the winning owners: —D. E. Walker, £1125 and gold cup valued at £100: J. C. and P. S. Gleeson. £1000; D. Twohill. £700; E. W. Alison, jun., £400: Jas. Paterson. £350: R- Hannon. £300: Mrs. E. Desert Glow and Rippling I were the most successful trainers of the meeting with three wins apiece, while W. J. Wilson (Appellant!. J. Lambess (Killute), J. Buchanan I Merry Damon'i. W. <_'. Woods (Transformer). W. H. Evans (Aurumavis). P. E. Pope (Irish Jig). M. J. Carroll (Curraghmore i. R. Hannon (King Abbeyi. and F. Gilchrist (Cawnpore) each trained a winner. W. Bagby (Tea Bell twice. Ring the Bell and Curraghmore i was the leading jot-key of the meeting with four wins. R- Reed (Appellant and Killute) and C. Mcßae (Rippling and Black Cruiser) were next with two wins each, while A. Driseoll i Desert Glow I. J. Cammick (Merry Damon i. E. Keesing (Transformer i, J. Armstrong (Aurnniavis I. C. Butler' (Uralla), R. E. Thomson (Irish Jig I, Ci, Holland (King Abbey), and R. McTaviah (Cawnpore) each had a winning rida.

Curraghmore won the Ferry Handi- j cap at Takapuna on Thursday in good : style. On Saturday, with a rise of 111b. ' in the Handicap, sht- was made a very warm proposition, but the best the could do was to get third. Auru- ' mavis got such a br<?a*r; on in the middle , stages of the that when Curragh- j more and Brushwood Boy tried to | bridge the gap it '>vis found to be be- j - yond them. j ] After raring so consistently at Ellers- ' J lip and Trentham over six furlongs, ( Lawnpore. with 5.5. looked to have a great chance of winning the Stewards ■ Handicap at Takapuna last week. He drew an outside position, but left with ; the others and won easily at the finish. With the steadier of "?:Z he contested j the Suburban Handicap on Saturday, i , but the impose was evidently beyond j him. L'awiipore has certainly proved himself a good horse during the last j few weeks. Most <<i his racing has been I done over six furlong*, though last sea- ; son he was placed in a revni furlong . event. " , i Transformer, by Thmnani, ran two | good - races at Takapnmi la«t week. ■ finishing third in the < up. after being ; well up at the top of the straight. On ' Saturday he was made favourite f.»r the Takapuna Handicap, and though a good ; way back in the early stages, he made up hi? ground quickly along the back and across the top, and was second to Desert ' Glow as tlipy turned for home. In the! ; run down the straight he soon had the j measure of the latter and beat him ! home. Transformer raced fairly well i last season and showed ability over nine ! furlongs. This season he demonstrated ! that he could stay l.y finishing second i ,to Te Monanui in the Auckland Racing ! j Hub Handicap, one ?!ii!e and α-half, \ j beating, among others. Count Cavour and j I The Banker. ' ; Tea Bell, the two-year-old colt by i Tea Tray—Hula <;irl. has proved a rare ' I bargain so far to Messrs. J. C. and P. S. | I Oleeson. who purchased him as a yearl- ! j ing at auction last Jam.ary for Itso gns. I After running unplaced in the Nursery i j Handicap at the Avotidale meeting he j ! won the Musket Stakes at Ellerslie in I : the spring, and subsequently annexed the Kakino Ha.ndic.ap at the. Takapuna spring meeting. He started three times ' at the Auckland summer meeting, being unplaced in the Nursery Handicap, and the Sylvia Handicap, and running third in the Criterion Handicap. At the recent 1 Thames meeting he won the Nursery i Handicap, and at Takapuna meeting last week scored in both two-year-old races. On Saturday he carried the steadier of 9.t> and won handsomely. In all Tea Bell has won £1670. Tt is stated that some time ago he was undpr offer to a southern sportsman for 7-lOgns, but he thought he was a bit small and would not take him. He must now be regretting his decision, for Tea Bell is a game youngster and should win many more races. He is a g-ood advertisement for his sire Tea Tray, whose stock only commenced to race this season.
