BUSH FIRES RAGING.
WORST FOR TWENTY YEARS. BATHURST DISTRICT ABLAZE SIXTY SQUARE JYIILES BURNING (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 12 noon.) SYDNEY, this clay. The bush fires in the Cotter River district are the worst for 20 years. Fears are again entertained for the safety of the Observatory and the pine plantations, at Mount Stromlo, in the Jingellic dis--. trict, near Albury. Fire is raging fiercely along a fifteenmile front in the Bathurst district. Sixty square miles of grass and fencing have been destroyed. Several homesteads and station build-, ings had close calls. The fire in this district is now practically under control. Little loss of stock has so far been reported. The bush fires which have been menacing the new Federal capital, Canberra, have again broken out. They now have a 20-mile front. The Federal territory is covered by a thick pall of smoke, and the fire-fighters are lying exhausted on the roadside after an all-night fight. —(A. and N.Z.)
