AUCKLAND'S FUTURE WATER SUPPLY.

iTo the Editor.l Sir.-—The newspaper controversy about j the costs for the construction of the pro- j posed water pipe line from the Waikato River to the city leininds mc of a pamphlet I read over 50 year- ago concerning a water supply fur the City of Glasgow. Scotland. A highly-qualified engineer was employed by the (Ila-gow City Council to report upon an auxiliary water supply for the c:iy. which was then in its infancy. This engineer, being a far-seeing, level-headed man. re;ili.-ed that the population would be doubled , within the Ptir-uing ten years, and therefore he recommended tapping I.fcli Katrine lor a permanent si.pj.ly. Fli-e-rimate of the co=t scared the ratepayers -a ho prote, ted. both publicly and privateiy. against incurring -uch liabiiitie-. The members of the ( .-.uncil backed and it~wa- duly carried out. Then the ; ratepayer- burned the engineer in effigy, ■uid called upon the councillors to n-ian. the requirements of tl;e city, and today there i< •' niuminiPii! erected to the ] memory of the engineer who was respon- j tdble for the new departure. Anyone who ! has witnessed the extension of the City I of Auckland during the last decade must j come to the conclusion that the day has rone by for considering tia-pot water I repositions, and that a permanent wafer supply must be sought for without any further delay. While dealing with the subject of Auckland's requirements, it may not be out of place to say that there is room for an experienced, competent consulting engineer to advise both the Harbour Board and the City Council regarding the heavy expenditure which is being carried nut continuously under the auspices of both bodies. It" is possible ' to secure the services of the right type of man provided the salary offers sufficient inducement and the conditions are fairly reasonable.—l am. etc.. RATEPAYER.
