Idler, Rangi and Dulcie were the first to cross, Kona and .Queen March being well up. Then came Avalon, Desert Gold, Joan and Iron Duke. On the close haul to the fcjandspit, Kona worked her way clear of the Dthers, and had a short lead from Avalon at the mark. It was a run with spinnakers to starboard to the nest mark, off l'arnell Point, and Eona still had a few lengths' lead from Avalon, with Queen March close up. On the long lead up harbour to the Watchman mark, Avalon closed up on Uona and the two had a good luffing match. Meantime Queen March had come up on the leaders. Kona's skipper would not let Avalon pass him to windward, and after a luffing match, both squared off on to their right course, with Rona still in the lead. This order was kept up past the Western wharf, when Queen March came up with the two leaders, who were still fighting for sveather position. Nearing the Watchman, Avalon took the lead, and it could be seen that Queen March, which had sailed the 3traightest course, would round first. It was now a close haul on the wind down the harbour to the Sandspit. The three leaders, after luffing short round the mark, stood down the Ponsonby shore on port tack. Avalon now did well, and sailed through Queen March's lee, and took the lead. Rona also passed Queen March. Shortly after this Avalon, when leading I boat, had the misfortune to carry away I tier weather rigging screw, and she at onte luffed up and lowered her sail, being towed to her moorings by the launch Maroro. Rona now got away a bit from Queen March, I the wind having a little more heart in it is they got down the harbour.
