CONGESTION OF TRAFFIC.
EUSES IN SYMONDS STHEEt COMPULSORY STOPS SUGGESTED A letter received from the Inspector of Police, enclosing reports of constables relating to congestion of traffic caused by buses at the top of Nymoncls Street was discussed at last night's meeting of tin* City Council. The inspector sug posted the provision of lms slops h'v by-law. Tin , Chief Traflic Inspector reported that By-law No. 1 provided that the driver of a vehicle shall not stop u-itim 2o feet of the end of a safely JJ except in obedience to any instructions given by an authorised officer. Mr. stated that difficulty was experienced with inward traffic, chiefly due to the manner in which buses encroached on the intersection, thereby causing obstruct ion. ]n part the fault was with the policeman on point duty, W ho j lll( i full authority for directing traflic. Coin pulsory bus stops at the respective i n " ward routes would prevent encroachment on the intersection, relieve traffic congestion and facilitate the work of the officer on point duly. He recommended (1) that compulsory omnibus stops on tile inward routes at the intersection of Symonda Street and Khyber Pass Road bo established ,30 feet from the corner of Khyber Pass Road and Symonda Street, and thirty feet from the' corner of Victoria Building (southward), formerly known as Porter's Corner. j n Synionds Street. (2) That notice ho?r-a 8 to that effect be placed at the respective stops. (.'{) That omnibuses set down and tnko up passengers ?t the points indicated ill clause 1, and. when passengers have boarded or alighted, buses to proceed on the inward journey! (4) That no vehicle be permitted to stop within thirty feet of th o intersection of Symonds Street and Klivber Pass Road, except in obedience to aiiv instruction given by an authorised officer. The whole matter was referred to the Finance and Lepal Committee.
