WELCOME RAIN.

IN WHANG ARE I DISTRICT. (Special to "Star.") WHANGAREI, Monday. The thunderstorm which broke over the Whangarei district at noon on Sunday developed later into heavy rains, which, up to the time of writing, have fallen unceasingly for over eight hours, and has really been a quick succession of thunderstorms, lasting over the time mentioned, which is most unusual for the Northern territory. Late this afternoon, owing to the continuous downpour, creeks, which have been running low since the middle of December, began to rise rapidly. The Wairariki stream, which draws its source from the Maungatapere, water-shed overflowed its banks, and inundated some of the lowlying areas in Whangarei township. To-day's rains, which still continues, have given the countryside a good soaking, and will definitely and finally remove any fears, which had started to arise among the farming community, owing to the dry hot spell just previous to the New Year. Later reports from outside districts indicate that the rainfall has been general in this part of the province during the past eight hours, and much benefit will accrue therefrom.
