A FALSE ALARM.
CALL TO SHORTLAND STREET. A call to the National Bank buildings, in Shortland Street, was received by the City Fire Brigade at 1.29 this afternoon. Two engines were quickly on the scene, but as there was no sign of fire an investigation of the building was carried out. There was a strong smell of burning on most of the floors, but fire was not located. The investigation had been in progress about 10 minutes' when it was made known that the smoke was coming from a small destructor at the rear of the building. An air channel caused an in-draught, and the smoke permeated the entire building.
