NEW SHIPPING SERVICE.
TO ECONOMISE IN FREIGHTS. NORTHERN FARMERS' SCHEME. A scheme to inaugurate a steamer service from Auckland to Opua, Whangaroa, Mangonui, Hokianga, Dargaville and Kaipara ports is the latest development in coastal shipping arrangements. Farmers in the North have formed themselves into the Northern Wairoa Steamship Co., Ltd., and have purchased an Australian steamer named the Kurnalpi, which arrived at Auckland last night. It is stated that their venture is an attempt to economise in freight rates. The Kurnalpi is not a larg-e steamer, having a cargo-carrying capacity of between 500 and 000 tons. She has two holds and three hatchways, and she steams a speed of eight knots. Her recent voyage from Sydney occupied 7 days 22 hours, and was made on a totalcoal consumption of only 40 tons. Wireless wiii be fitted on the steamer at Auckland, and she will enter the new service at the beginning of next week.
