BUS DRIVERS IN COURT. MANY PROSECUTIONS. FAILURE TO SUBMIT TIME-TABLES. A number of charges against omnibus drivers were brought this morning before Mr. W. E. McKean, S.M., by the ChiefTraffic Inspector (Mr. Geo. Hogan.) Cutting Corners. "This is an extremely dangerous practice. There is no excuse for it," said the magistrate in fining each 01 the following 20/ and costs for cutting corners:— J. W. Brain, H. E. Roberts, J. Whiteside and A. Wooley. No Bus Time-Tables. "It has become a habit with some omnibus drivers to divert from their routes on to routes already well-sup-plied," said Mr. Hogan, in regard to some half-dozen charges against drivere for failing to submit time-tables. "On Sundays," said Mr. Hogan, "they take up routes without time-tables. Consequently it is very difficult tjo control traffic. -The department is qttite prepared to meet these men if they will submit time-tables that are suitable." Fines of 10/ and costs were inflicted on the following: —P. U. Barrett (on each of two charges), G. Boler, T. H. Newton, F. J. Williamson and Pryor 'and Postelwaight (two charges). E. 'A. Carter, for whom Mr. Marshall White appeared, pleaded not guilty. He was fined 10/ and costs, and the same amount for failing to supply a bus in accordance with his time-table. Boler and Williamson were also fined 10/ and costs for failing to supply drivers with time-tables. Cars Unattended. Leaving their cars unattended cost S. Atkinson 20/ and P. Caley, J. Crichton Walter S. Armiger, and W. H. Watt 10/ and costs. Unauthorised Stands. For leaving their buses on unauthorised stands, J. Elliott, T. R. Meredith and S. Pengelly were mulcted in the sums of 10/ and costs each. Inspector Palmer said that buses were being left continually on the waterfront, thus creating congestion. Failure to produce a license -when asked by an inspector cost T. W. Donnell 10/ and costs. A. Middleton, who had no proper number-plate on a vehicle was fined a similar amount." P. H. Knight was charged with dangerous driving. It was stated that he travelled on a motor cycle at" 34 miles an hour. He passed a school when children were about. Many complaints had been made about the speed of motor cycles. Knight was fined £2 and costs. For riding a bicycle at the rear of a lorry E. Rawnsley was fined 10/. An inspector said that he chased him on a motor cycle and told him to let go the lorry, but Rawnsley refused. Fo. failing to register the bicycle defender.was charged another 10/. By-law Attacked. An intimation that he intended attacking the validity of the City Council by-law respecting omnibus timetables was given this morning to Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., by Mr. Field, who pleaded not guilty on behalf of J.: 1.. Gunning, charged with failing to submit a time-table. The chief traffic inspector (Mr. Hogan) asked that in view* of counsel's intention, the city solicitor should be present. Legal argument was therefore adjourned. Mount Eden Prosecutions. Charles Leslie Stoddart was prosecuted by Inspector H. Bransgrove, of the Mount Eden Borough Council for (a) carrying more passengers than his bus was licensed to carry; and (b) having the vehicle's front identification marl? obscured. He was fined 20/ and 8/ costs" on the first charge,' and 10/, plus 12/ costs, on the second, with an additional 20/ for witnesses. Thomas Graham Walker, who allowed the rear iiidex mark of his vehicle to become obscured, was fined 10/ and 7/ costs. • BIG POLICE LIST. The major portion of this morning's sitting of the Police Court was occupied in dealing with charges in respect of breaches of the by-laws, brought by the police. Failure to display a tail-light on their cars cost each of the following 10/, plus costs: —George Avery, James B. Cuthbert, Wm. George Francis, Phyllis Frankham and W. A. Harrison. John Robert Rendall was fined 20/. Thomas Boler. who.sat in a motor on November 5, and threw lighted fireworks into the street, was fined £1, with costs 11/. For not having lights on - a motor vehicle at Devonport, Kana Bhana was fined £2, with costs 9/. For similar offences Joseph Brady, Jack T. Harper and Claud Hill were each fined 20/, and Frederick Fraser 10/, with costs 9/. Joseph Hyman who parked his car without illumination had to pay 20/. W. T: Bellchamber (Mr. Maxwell White) was fined £2, with costs 13/, for having driven a crowded bus in Manukau Road at a speed of 30 miles an hour. Others fined for speeding were:—Lewis Anderson. £3 3/: M. J. Cameron, £2; Richard Holmes Champion, £3; Wm. H. Dobbie, £5: Harold Edward Grubb, £3; Harry Lund, £3. Negligent driving cost Edward Lye £2 and Leonard Carr 20/. Mrs. I. Poutney was fined 20/ for cutting a corner. It cost Thomas Miller £1 for not keeping his car close to the footpath. For not having a driving license, Henry Dawson Boles' was fined £2. It cost Desmond Kelly 20/, and costs, while Charles Headland, who ' employed him, had to pay a similar sum. Netta M. Jesser and Frederick Kenyon were each fined 20/. '. . „ Failure to notify change of ownership of a ear resulted in T. Edwards being fjned 10/ with expenses 23/. George R. Champion, who iised an unassigned number, was fined £2. cost 19/, and Robert Cooke. who lent the number, had to pay costs 9/. For being blind to; the signals of policemen on point duty, Viole.t Moses was mulcted in the sum of 20/, with costs 11/. George Henry and Ellis Rowell were each fined a similar amount. Wm. Taylor and A. Stewart had to pay 10/. Claude Baurdofc was mulcted in the sum of 20/. with costs 9/, Hector Jordan 10/, and Andrew Smith 5/, for riding bicycles without lights.
