, CRICKET IN AUSTRALIA. SHEFFIELD SHIELD MATCH. SYDNEY, January 11. The Sheffield Shield cricket match, New South Wales v. South Australia, was commenced to-day. New South Wales in their first innings made 339 runs for four jvickets (Collins 108, Bardsley 159, Macartney 26, Kippax 21). Collins scored slowly, taking no risks, but he gave three easy chances, 'one before he had reached double figures. Bardsley was also careful in the.early stages, but later opened out and played with great freedom, adding runs rapidly. The South Australians' fielding was very patchy.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.) GOLF IN ENGLAND, LONDON, January 11. Playing on Friday in the final of the Oxford and Cambridge Golf Society's match, president's putter, Wethered and Storey were all square at the 13th hole. They continued halving holes until the 24th, when darkness intervened and necessitated the replaying of the match.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.) CALIFORNIAN OPEN GOLF. LONDON. January 11. In the final of the open golf championship of Southern California, Cooper won the first pri__ of £700, completing the 72 holes in 279.
