A NOTED BOXER.

GRLFFO DOWN AND OUT. 1 BEGGING IN NEW YORK. 5 (Received 10 a.m.) NEIW YORK, December 9. "Young Griffo," the Australian boxer, whose name was once a byword throughout American sporting circles, is now , Utterly destitute, and sits nightly on the steps of a Broadway motion picture theatre, miserably clad, begging small coins from passers-by. Griffo came to the United States when le was 22 years of age, and is now 55. He was noted in the days of saloons for a trick of laying his handkerchief on the floor, standing on it. and betting anyone any sum he was unable to hit his '(Griffo's) face, even though he' held his lands to his sides. It is his boast that le never lost such a bet except to a trained boxer. He is credited with knowing more boxing tricks than any other pugilist of the period. Griffo was recognised while begging hj an Australian (Peter Kenny), who is trying to interest Australians here to arrange a benefit. .Griffo was recently erroneously reported dead owing to mistaken identift-j cation.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.) '
