TAVO BAKERS FINED.. (By Telegraph.—Own;Correspotdeht.) '■ : OHRISTCHURCH, this day. Before Mr. H. A. Young, S.M., in the Jtagistrate's. Court yesterday, Mr. Thotnas E. Echofl, inspector of -health, proceeded against two bakers for failing to provide coverings for their bread. The magistrate said the eases would be a W&rning to others, and that in future tilo penalty would be heavier: "Guilty," pleaded John Campbell, ■ through iis Solicitor, Mr. A. C. Brassington, to a charge! of having failed to 'protect * Ireltd from dust, etc., by not providing ally sort of covering on top of his motor delivery vian, on which were placed some currant loaves.. On behalf'of the " Heaith Department Mr. A. W. Brown silid that the case was the flirst of its kitid brought under the nehv regulations.The Department did- not seek a large , penalty. In mitigation of the offence, Mr. Brassington said the bread - was ( being taken to a shop in. the motol-1- van, atld that it had not been exposed for ' itiord than five minutes. . Counsel asked his AVorship to make the' penalty as light as possible. "Because," he said, "tlie fact that his name will be published will be a severe penalty in itself." Sis Worship said he would- not inflict ft substantial penalty in - the present cases; the Department did not want him to dc that, because the cases Were the flfet under the regulations. However, lie llfped they would 'be a warning to. others. A nominal penalty of 20/ and costs was inflicted. Another baker, E. Jennings, admitted linving had bread in ft backet without covering on the running board of liis ntotor van. Counsel for Jennings. Mr. ft jj, Wanklyn, said the bread had not Ijcen uncovered for any great length of time. His Worship convicted Jennings ahd Ordered him to pay costs.
