EXPORT OF FRUIT.

CONDITIONS FAVOURABLE.

I FOR EECOED SEASON". • (Ry Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON, this day. The export of fruit from New Zealand commencing' about the end of January is likely to reach a total of 400,000 rases. Preliminary estimates placed the figure at 3.50,000, but largely increased demands for epace from Hawke's Bay, Auckland, and the first appearance of the Gisborne district in export, will swell the total. The past few months have Loon most suitable for fruitgrowing, particularly in the Nelson district, where very little rain has fallen. Mr. Jas. Campbell, Director of the Horticultural Division, states that he has just returned from a visit to Hawke's Bay and Poverty Bay districts, where indications are that a most prosperous season will be enjoyed by fruitgrowers. "I was simply astounded," said Mr. Campbell, "to see the way in which orchards, which I had assisted to lay down from ten to twelve years ago, had come on. The trees are now well grown, and are beautifully clean." The growers of Hawke's Bay expect to export 75,000 cases during the coming season. In fact, the amount they will export will be restricted to the amount of expert labour which is available for packing. Gisborne is uniquely situated in that growers there have a monopoly of the local market. It is, however, a difficult matter to gauge the exart requirements of any local market, and there comes a time when growers find they must export their surplus. Gisborne growers expect to send about 4000 cases overseas this season.
