PROTECTING RETURNED MEN.

WAR LEGISLATION DISCUSSED. SOME ALTERATIONS ASKED FOR: As an outcome of a letter received from a firm of merchants doing business in the city, the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce at a meeting held yesterday afternoon discussed war regulations dealing with the protection of assisted discharged soldiers against distraint and bankruptcy, etc. It was considered that the regulations in question should be revoked. These regulations were made on April 29, 1919 and are, by the War Regulations Continuance Act, 1920. continued in force. Under them it is provided •that no one may without the consent of the made on the recommendation of a stipendiary magistrate, issue any process of execution against the property of an assisted discharged soldier or file a 'bankruptcy petition against an assisted discharged soldier. After considering the matter at some length the following resolution was carried:— "That it is the opinion of this council that the legislation now in force protecting returned soldiers against the ordinary legal processes for the recovery of debts and the enforcement of con"tracts is no longer necessary; and, as ■evidence is available that certain few individuals, to the detriment of the commercial community, are sheltering under the benefits which the legislation confers, this chamber is of opinion that euch legislation should be revised."
