RAILWAY FATALITY.
ENGINE AND CAR COLLIDE. ONE MAN KILLE3. ANOTHER SERIOUSLY INJURED. (Ky Telegraph.—Press Association.) MASTERTOX, Sunday. While motoring from Wellington to Masterton on Saturday afternoon, Mr. K. W. Matthews, builder, of Masterton. collided with the Southward express at Featherston crossing. Mr. Kevin Matthews, of Petone, a nephew of the driver, was killed outright. The elder Mr. Matthews -was considerably injured and now lies in hospital. The accident occurred at the Fitz--herbert Street crossing , , about 30 chains from the station. Mr. W. K. Matthews was driving the ear, which struck, the engine square on. The oar was wrecked and the occupants were thrown into the air. Mr. K. L. Matthews, who was sitting next the driver, was hurled 15 yards or 20 yards. When picked up he was lying clear of the- lino and across Ihc signal wires. lie had received shocking injuries to his head and was dead. Mr. \V. K. Matthews was thrown clear, falling on the grassy side of the track. He was found to be suffering from a broken arm. concussion and shock. He was conveyed to a private hospital at Featherston, where he is expected to recover. The crossing, which is a well known one. is dangerous, as the view is obscured. I)i3 1 it is equipped with warning bells, which were ringing at the time. It can only be conjectured that the victims of the accident did not hear them.
