BOWLING.

THE PENNANT MATCHES. FOTJR-RINK CHAMPIONSHIP. (By TRUNDLEE.) Bowlers are almost inclined to "touch ■wood" when thoy talk about the weaIher this season, for it must surely be a record to start off with ton consecutive fine Saturdays, and nobody would like to break the spell. The second round in the Pennant matches came off on Saturday under almost ideal conditions, the only difficulty being a little too much wind. The newly-instituted four-rink championship completed the second round with favourable results in one important respect, in that the various clubs have evened up their respective positions to a slight extent in one section, and to a very marked degree in the other. This will be seen clearly by the following list of last Saturday's wins, the second column showing the number of wins in the previous round, and. the third column the number to date:— SECTION A. Dec. 5. Nov. 14. Total.

There are no percentages in the fourrink championship, the score being taken "on the number of wins."' In the Pennant' matches, however, the scoring is by the percentage of wins to the total number of rinks played by each club, and the following table shows the numLer of rinlis, the number of wins and losses last Saturday, and the percentage of wins up to date (adding the two rounds together). For comparison, the next column shows the percentage of wine in the iirsfc round only, and the outside column gives the percentage gained by each club last year:— SECTION A.

* Did not compete last year. These figures appear to be a complete justification of the system of conducting the Pennant matches on the percentage basis. It Jias always been held us a theory that this is the only conceivable way in which the small clubs, like Avondale, have just as good a chance as the large ones, but it is not always that the theory works out so nicely in actual practice. Here we have two of the smallest clubs in each section at the Tery top of the list, and they will receive the warmest congratulations on making such pood use of their opportunity. Ellerslie have jumped into prominence by defeating West End and pushing them well down, the only other striking change in that section being the defeat of Rawhiti at the hands of Carlton, go that they have changed places in the list. Papatoetoe are having a remarkable run, although, hardly surprising , to those who saw some of their players performing at Carlton last year, since when they have had a further increase in strength. Otahuhu have received a big lift, but a good deal of this was due to meeting Manurewa, a young club very deficient in experienced players. Mount Eden are getting the benefit of their smaller quota, for they met Takapuna in great force and removed them from their proud position, talcing third place themselvea. Devonport and Epsom did well, but both have to work off a heavy overdraft. Rocky .Nook have fallen from grace, but Mount Eden and Mount Albert will know better than to take any liberties with them next Saturday on that account. The Thompson Shield. The twenty competitors from Carlton left for Wellington by the Limited last night, and to-morrow they play for the Thomson Shield. The following teams Lave been selected to play for the Wellington Club:—R. W. Davies, A. McL. "Wilson, C. Macarthur, W. Glendining; I. Salek, J. B. Brinsden, H. W. Frost, H. G. Mayer; L". Ledger, W. N. Dempsey, F. J. Tasker, S. Potter; A. Ranisay, J. C. Redmond, J. J. Roberts, E. J. Hill. After the sixteen Carlton players for the shield have been selected, the remaining four will play a friendly match against C. W. Tanner, H. J. Reid, G. Magnus and M". McLean. Fourteen or the twenty Wellington players selected "were included in the sixteen who came to Auckland last December. Of the remaining two, one is dead, Mr. A. Turner, while Mr. J.
