BOWLING.

ST. ANDREW'S DAY. HOLIDAY WELL SPENT. (By TRUNDLER.)'. The annual Public Service pairs tournament took place on Monday at the Dominion Road green, under tbe usual pleasant weather conditions. The president of the association, Mr. C. W. Garrard, opened the proceedings with a few brief remarks in which he commented on the number of veterans present, although be regretted that their veteran umpire, Mr. 11. Wetherilt, was away for the first time, on account of indisposition. It was a great sight to see the meeting of young and old. the hoary heads which had grown grey ia the service of the country, and the younger generation which is now carrying on the active work, all mingling in this annual outing. A warm welcome was given to Mr. Harry Heinus, one of tlie oldest of tlie veterans, who looked in for a short time, and the highest hopes were expressed for his early recovery, so that be will again participate in these matches. Competitors were also pleased to see Mr. Colthurst again after an absence of three years in Dunedin, for he took such an active part in the institution of these contests that his reappearance was especially welcome. Unfortunately, the changes in the same department (Railways) caused the absence of one prominent officer, Mr. J. W. Lowry, who skipped the winning pairs a couple of years ago, as he lias been transferred to Wellington, where he has already made his mark. It is impossible to make special mention of all the fine matches played, but probably the one which created tbe most interest was when Education (Lambourno and Garrard) met Lands and Survey (Potter and Maher). Both had won on previous occasions, honours being with Education, and both played a magnificent game, Lands and Survey pulling it off on this occasion, largely owing to two superb shots from the champion of West End. Another interesting holiday match was instituted on Monday, when the Banks met the Insurance on tbe Devonport green in a two-rink bowling match, the juniors of the respective staffs being engaged in their usual' cricket match on the adjoining grounds. The morning gave an aggregate win for Insurance, the following being tlie scores, Banks being mentioned first:—Cox, Probert, Eyrie, Whittle, 20, v Coulthard, Campbell, Blair, White 15; C. Hamlin, A. ~8. Mackay, C. C. Spedding, A. G. Fookes 14, v. C. Palmer, A. C. Baker, C. W. Spooner, J. C. Badeley 27. The -teams adjourned to the Masonic Hotel for lunch, where Mr. Palmer proposed that in view of the successful initiation of this match they should make it an annual function, or, possibly, repeat it on some other saint's day in addition. This suggestion met with general approval, and it looks as if either St. Patrick or St. George will be remembered in the autumn. The same teams played in the afternoon, merely changing their opponents, when Fookes beat White by seven points and Badeley still retained the aggregate for the day in favour of Insurance by a sensational trail with his last bowl, defeating Whittle by four points. *'

The weekly match for the Denison Pins, postponed from last Wednesday owing to the absence of one of the to-ams at the Thames tournament, took place on the Mount Eden green last Monday in glorious weather, so that the competitors aad a distinct advantage "as. compared with the original showery day. The visitors outplayed the local team, the match resulting:—Challengers (Mount Albert): Stevens, I Rowe, E. Thomas, J. Thomas 24, v. Vivian. Bainbridge, Jas. Smith, Fraser 12.' This afternoon the new holders are meeting a challenge from Remuera (Somerfield, Garrard, Sax'ton, Mcßobie), and next Wednesday the winners will play Auckland (A. J. Parker), while a week later the challenge will come from'Onehunga (A. A- Brown).

Honouring a Secretary. j A very pleasing function took place during the afternoon tea adjournment at the Epsom pavilion last Saturday, when a presentation of two oak Morris chairs and a gold-mounted pen was made to Mr. Alex. Wright, in recognition of his services as club secretary for eight years. In the absence of Mr. J. R. Hetheringtou (president), Mr. E. F. Jones (vicepresident) made the presentation, referring in terms of appreciation to Mr. Wright's splendid services and- his personal popularity. During the eight years the membership of the club exactly double, and all were sorry that Mr. Wright felt it incumbent to resign the secretaryship. Mr. Jones explained that the fountain pen. was a personal gift from the club's president, who had written from Dunedin regretting his inability to attend that day. Mr. Wright, who was quite overcome by the handsome gifts made to himself and Mrs. Wright, expressed his deepest .thanks for the great kindness shown to him. ■ Mr. S. Potter, of the Wellington Bowling Club, and one of the North Island members of the Domiuion Council, has renewed his o_"er of a - speei'al prize to any Otago rink which may-be successful in-winning the rinks event ,at the Dominion tournament next January. The big event has already been .twice won by Otago teams, in 1918 and in 1922, on each occasion the tournament taking place in Dunedin, and it will he interesting to see if they can repeat this performance when the tournament is again in their own city. Probably the chief interest in the comiflg tournament, however, will centre round the doings of the seven British rinks who will take part, for no Dominion tournament has ever before had such assistance. An entry of 23 British competitors ,in.the singles, and 26 players in the pairs," appears to fully justify the decision to alter the order of the sections this time, ■Sa_!™? y W .
