AUCKLAND LAWYER'S LAPSE

SUED FOB MAINTENANCE. MAY GO TO GAOL. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.; CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. In the Police Court to-day, before Mr. H. A. Young. S.M., Archibald Lyon Denniston, an Auckland solicitor, was proceeded against for £6 arrears on an order in respect of his wife. "I feel very strongly about this," said Mr. P. J. Jones, maintenance officer. "The defendant has held up the proceedings on- technicalities as much -as he could." Mr. Jones said that on August 26, 1924, an order was made against defendant to pay £2 a week maintenance for hi* wife, and £1 a week for the child.. Later the order in respect of the child was made against the grandfather instead of the father, leaving defendant to pay £2 a week for the maintenance of his wife. A case was then brought by defendant to have the order reduced and the arrears cancelled. The case was adjourned on various pretexts, and finally an order was made that defendant should pay only 30/ a week. There were arrears owing amounting to £103, and the case in respect of those was adjourned sine did. Since then further arrears had accumulated. Defendant took no notice of letters requesting him to pay, and therefore the .present information was laid in respect of the sum of £6 unpaid. Defendant had been con-, victed on three different charges, and, had paid in each case rather than go to gaol. Defendant was sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment. He will be released on payment of £6 arrears of maintenance.
