DISMISSAL OF ENGINEER.
MAYOR ASKED TO RESIGN. (By Telegraph.—rress Association.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. A meeting attended by about 1000 people, was held in Lower Hutt to protest against the action of the Borough Council m. dismissing the borough engineer, Mr. J. R. Barnes. After hearing Mr. Barries' reply to charges made against him, resolutions were passed challenging the Mayor to resign or contest' a by-election on the question,- and directing the new Mayor, if such were elected, °to reinstate Mr. Barnes at the same salary, £500, in lieu of the £800 it was proposed to pay a--ne\V engineer.
