GREAT POLL PREDICTED.

NEARLY TWO HUNDRED CANDIDATES. ELECTORS AROUSED TO INTENSE INTEREST. JIT Not for many years has so much interest teen displayed I in a general election as in this election of 1925, nor for a "j considerable period has there been displayed such feverish J energy on the part of candidates in pushing the policies of j their respective parties. With the certainty of a largely ;,'* increased vote, consequent on the compulsory registration of :\ electors, which has placed very many thousands of additional ] names on the roll, aspirants for Parliament have felt it .* imperative that they should put forth their most strenuous '■{ endeavours, for the goodwill of the new electors—the great number who either had not a vote, or who did not vote at J the last poll— had to be courted, as well as the satisfying of ,ii former supporters or the conversion of former opponents. "f It is predicted by those who have been through the stress bf many political fights that the poll at this election will be jj an overwhelming record. That sounds quite feasible. The predictions of the representatives of the various parties do »,j not sound so feasible. Each party is claiming that it will return 'j the strongest in the new Parliament. On the part of some of j„! the candidates it seems a case of confidence run amok. 1 In addition to the 3000 people packed into the Town :i Hall at the Prime Minister's meeting last night, there was at one time a crowd of some 2000 outside in Queen and Grey '■4 Streets listening to the percolation of politics within. It was • 1 a remarkable demonstration of the interest being taken in the 4 fight, I Just 201 candidates are listed for the poll, but there are !i ten Maori candidates for four teats (the Maori election is i taking place to-day), which leaves 190 European Candidates J on the ballot papers. But there* are two cases in which j! candidates have withdrawn—those of Mr. F. W. Grigg (Eden) 1 and G. Edie (Awarua). Owing to their late withdrawal, the I names of these candidates will appear on the ballot papers, } but the electors are warned that to vote for them will be votes , £ \vasted. .-.jj For the guidance of electors, *the names of the candidates •£ are again published hereunder: — fi ■
