At the Supreme Court Charles William Bryan, on two charges of forgery and one of false preten-:es was sentenced to j IS months on each, charge, the sentences { to be cumulative. He was apparently attompting to board ' a rouncil motor hns \rhen lie slipped and fell beneath the veiih-ie. one wheel passing over his k.n-<-. He wa- taken to the distrift hospital, where he is proareesina satisfactorily. The ""Polynesian Gazette" reports that j one of the finest collections of bLeached i coral has been collected and is being shipped from the old Fiji capital of Lt'vuka to the Fiji conn a; the Diinedin Exhibition. The specimens include eighteen varieties, and some of the most delicate sample*, which it is hoped will reach Dunedin without accident, as they are unique in their beautr. Lecil Mark Brown i .'57. did not appear, and the Magistrate. Mr. F. K. Hunt, instructed that a warrant should be issued for !i:s arrest. Some time afterwards Brown appeared voluntarily. Senior .'Sergeant. Edwards -aid that accused struck Wylie in a boardinghouse in Newton, while complainant was having a meal. It. took two constables and a naval man to effect Brown's arrest and handcuff him. A strong plea to have accused lined, rather than imprisoned. was made by accused's employer, but Mr. Hunt sa;d that he was not going to have policemen resisted or assaulted. "The police are our bulwarks between freedom and lawlessness." he said in sentencing j Brown to Ii days' imprisonment.
