OPPOSITION TACTICS.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—May I be permitted to refute a mischievous statement which has been industriously circulated all over the city since Saturday evening last. At Jlr. Oakley Browne's meeting in Eden Terrace on Saturday night last, the police saw fit to eject one of the audience. At question time, an opponent of Mr. Browne's, asked why the man whom the police had ejected had been arrested. Notwithstanding Jlr. Browne's assurance from the platform, and the chairman's assurance at the close of the meetinsr that such was not the case, this individual, in conjunction with quite a number of his friends, persisted in declaring that it was so. All. of course, to try and influence people against the candidate. I have heard this statement repeated many times since then, and 1 characterise it as a lie, worthy of the source from which it sprang, and one not likely to assist whichever party to whom this particular ind'vidual owes allegiance, as quite a number of those present who were cot quite decided as to how they would -rote, openly stated that after that, they would vote for Oakley Browne.—l am. etc.. PERCY McELWAIN (chairman).
