Formerly the "only got a minute to catch the boat" people at Stanley used to time themselves at the lamp posts, nnd reserve the spurt for the "straight" at the landing. Now they time themselves "going round the bends." Which requires some explanation. Stanley wharf used to be very long and very straight. It is still very long, but has developed sinuosities. In order to carry the pipeline through which spoil is to be pumped by the suction dredge from the harbour side into the reclamation the Harbour Board is making for Stanley Park, piles were driven in alongside the wharf, and these were connected with the decking by cross pieces. A ferry wharf is generally not remarkable for solidity, and the Stanley jetty under this side influence has acquired several bulges which throw its former accuracy of line much astray. Hence the jokes of the residents who are pressed for time, and have to sprint for the ferry steamer.
