NO CRIMINAL INTENT.
BURNING OF A LORRY, i SERIOUS ttSARGE DISMISSED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) GISBORNE, this day. In a case in which three men, Reginald Edward Clarke. Thomas Hyde, and Frederick Avcrktcll", were charged with the theft of 20 gallons of benzine, the property of the Government, and with setting fire to a motor lorry, Detective McLeod, giving evidence regarding investigations in connection with the fire, stated that had Clarke told him he had reported the matter, ihe case would not have been brought forward. The djteetive blamed the lorry driver for not reporting the matter. Accused had reported tlie matter as soon as it happened. Counsel for the defence said the accused had merely done what any motorist would have done—borrowed some benzine, and they were prepared to pay lor the damage accidentally caused. The Bench stated that the case had been a very unfortunate one, the evidence clearly showed there was no criminal intent. Tho case was therefore dismissed.
