PROPOSED XEW BRIDGE. POLL TO BE TAKES". (By Telegraph—Own Correspondent-! HAMILTON, this day. Owing to the cost of obtaining necessary information from the engineer dealing with the proposal to erect a new bridge across the Waikato River at one of the three suggested points in Bryce Street, Rosstrevor Street, or Liverpool Street, the committee wdiieh was set up to investigate the matter recommended to the council last evening that, in view of the proposed referendum, whereby ratepayers would vote on the question, the council place a proposal before ratepayers to build a bridge opposite Piako Street. Claudelands. coming into Victoria Street, midway between London and Rosstrevor Streets. This recommendation was adopted. Alleged Breach of Faith. The Hamilton Council has not yet finished with what they consider a distinct breach of faith on the part of the Education Department in regard to the exchange of certain lands in the borough. The council, it will be remembered, consented to close Arawa Street, and hand the land over to the Department as a site of a present technical school, the | Department, in return, to transfer a section of land Ln Grantham Street ad- 1 joining the chief post office. The Depart- | ment. however, failed to comply with j the agreement, and naturally the city , fathers are not on very friendly terms j with the Minister of Education just now. j One councillor declared that the Department had taken the council down. The council decided last evening to ask the Department if it still refused to transfer to the council for recreation purposes six acres of land of the prim- j ary education reserve adjoining the railway reserve in Rifle Range Road "Woodlands Swamp Drainage. \\ ben correspondence relative to the Government repcrt on drainage of the; Woodlands swamp area came before the Mangawara Board yesterday, the chairman (Mr. F. Herbert), said he thought the Minister should be advised that the Mangawara Board, in conjunction with other drainage boards interested, i? con- j sidering the Goverament scheme. Mr. W. S. Carter remarked that the board was i arranging for very urgent w*>rks within ] its own area, and these wens in general I harmony with the Oev-ernment scheme. a their schemes were held up on account of the Government report, it would un- j doubtedly be a hardship to the rate- j payers in their area. He added that it j seemed possible that if the Government scheme should be carried out. many years were likely to elapse before anything practical was dene. The chairman stated that the board as a whole felt that they would like an assurance from the Minister that no work they had at present in hand, or contemplated, would be hampered as the result of the report, and they passed a resolution a«M>rdingly.

Site for Maternity Heme. The borough cuuneil received -welcome intimation at their meeting last Evening that there is now no difficulty in regard to the acquisition of a site for a, maternity home in the town, and that a clause providing for tiie purchase of land by the council for presentation to the Hospital Board will be included in the Washing Up Bill, as well as clauses relating to the lease to the Plunket Society and exchange of property in Hamilton East for purposes of a grave! pit.
