G.P.O. PRESENTATION.

- t MR. F. T. R. JOHNSON. Mr. F. T. R. Johnson, Controller of the Post Office Savings Bank, who retired on superannuation on Wednesday, says the "Dominion," has had a long land intereschig career in the Post Office. Mr. Johnson first joined up with the Telegraph Department at Blenheim in January, 1880, before the two Departments were amalgamated. He resigned from the Telegraph Department at the end of the year 1880, and paid a visit to England. He there joined the Postal service in Portsmouth and got' a training in all branches of the work. Returning to New Zealand towards the end of 1884, he was reappointed to the Amalgamated Post and Telegraph Department at Wellington on January 20, 1883. Mr. Johnson was employed in the district office at Wellington, Napier, and Auckland from 18S5 until 1907, when he was called to the head office at Wellington. After filling various positions, he was promoted to be Chief Clerk of the accountants' branch in 1912, Assistant Controller of Savings Banks and Accounts in February, 1917, and Controller in October, 1923.

On Wednesday afternoon the G.P.O. staff gathered and made a presentation of a roll-top desk to the retiring controller. In making the presentation Mr. A. Markman, secretary of the Department, expressed on behalf of the stall best wishes for Mr. Johnson's enjoyment of his well-earned rest. On tke call ot Mr. Markman. cheers were heartily given for Mr. and Mrs. Johnson. In returning thanks, Mr. Johnson recorded his appreciation of the loyal cooperation he had always received from his staff. He would always follow the progress of the Department with great interest.
