THE OTAKI CONTEST.
■NATIONAL CANDIDATE. (Hy Telegraph.—Press Association.! LEVIN, this day. Mr. C. I. Harkness, National candidate for Otaki, opened his campaign last night. He criticised the Government's failure to assist primary industries by a herd-testing subsidy, financing bacon works, and ensuring cheaper fertilisers. JHe contended that the Government wheat regulations were killing the poultry industry. He favoured a State Bank, and State shipping. WAIRAU MEMBER'S SPEECH. (By Telegraph.—l'ress Association.'! BLENHEIM, this day. Mr. W. J. Girling, sitting Government member for Wairau, opened his election campaign last evening, trenchantly criticising the Labour party, which he claimed was deeply infected with the Communist germ. He declared himself in favour of fusion, and predicted that the Nationalist ranks would be so attenuated next session that they would come over to Reform. He outlined the Government's achievements in humanitarian legislation, and stressed its achievements, through the State Advances Office, in regard to housing. He was accorded a vote of thanks and continued confidence.
