NEWMARKET BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson, presiding.

The District Engineer of Railways wrote stating that the planking on the overbridge in Broadway had been bolted to the beams instead of being spiked. Tne object was to obviate the noise of the traffic that passed over the bridge. The letter was received. The Onehunga Borough Council wrote stating that it had decided to support the suggestion that traffic license fees be distributed upon the basis of population 30 per cent, traffic 30 per cent, area 20 per cent, and road mileage 20 per cent. In regard to the question of street lighting the engineer reported that the j matter of expediting the erection ot' street lighting fittings had been discussed with the Power Board. The board was using every endeavour to ! complete the work but could not put some of the circuits into operation until \ certain apparatus had arrived. It was decided on the report of the Legal and Finance Committee not to take any further action in the case m which judgment was given against the council in a claim by a motorist. , The Mayor reported that the library was opened on Monday. September SI. and the support accorded the venture could be described as highly satisfactory. During the first week ip plications were received from 33 persons for membership in the lending department. : The finances at the disposal of the committee would permit of the purchase i of 50 new books per month.
