THE CONFERENCE LEVIES. $ , At a meeting of the committee of tte Avondale Jockey Club last evening, it was decided to heartily support the Auckland Racing Club in its protest against the ever-increasing levies of the New Zealand ••' Racing Conference. It was also decided to suggest that the Auckland Racing Clnb convene a meeting of delegates of the whole of the Auckland provincial clubs to discuss the position. / SCRATCHINGS. Megan was withdrawn from all engagements at the Avondale spring meeting at • 12.45 p.m. to-day.
There are bright moments.in the lif& of a schoolmaster. At a recent examination in general knowledge a pupil defined a volcano as follows:—"A mountain with a hole in the top, and if you look down the hole you can see the creator smoking." "Garge," the. old man at the hall, waa seeing his wife off at the village sta--tion. Like most of her class, she was unaccustomed to travelling by train, -so'•;■ her dutiful husband gave a few parting instructions. "When you stops at i station, Maria," he said, finally, "put your face out of the window. Then nobody will pet in."
