SECONDARY INDUSTRIES.
DOMINION CONFERENCE. SOME PROGRESS MADE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The animal conference of the Industrial Corporation of New Zealand opened to-day. Councillor Luckie, Deputy-Mayor, extended a welcome to visiting delegates on behalf of the Mayor, and emphasised the importance to the Dominion of our secondary industries. Mr. L. T. Watkins, in a presidential address, said more progress had been made during the past year than ever before in the history of the organisation. He referred to a questionnaire prepared for submission to candidates in the general election to bring our secondary industries more under public notice. Exhibition trains had been carefully considered. The executive was unanimously of opinion that they would be of high value in advertising Dominion industries. The question of scientific industrial research had been brought before the Government, with the result that we were shortly to have the advice of one or two leading British authorities. He hoped some useful scheme ■ would result. In the matter of the proportion of British goods and labour in goods entitled to preference, the Government had, on their representations, raised the proportion from 25 to 75 per cent, but, owing to adverse influence, the date of operation had been deferred till next January, and the proportion arranged for might be subject to revision.
