CARTLOADS OF VEGETABLES.
STOLEN FROM CHINAMAN.
AN ARREST MADE. Por some months past the Onehunga police have been watching the Chinamen's gardens at Onehunga and Mangere trying to catch thieves stealing- the vegetables. Numerous complaints have been received from the celestials that somebody would enter their gardens at night and take away the sacks of vegetables ready for taking to the market early next morning. On more than one occasion a cart has been emptied of its contents, valued at £9 or £10. Lust night Constable V. . E. Poll went out at about II o'clock on his bike and rode round the gardens at Mangere. He was followed shortly afterwards by Constable W. 1-. Johnson, and both kept watch. They were rewarded for their vigilance when the v saw a man. about 50 years of a"c calmly shifting sacks of all kinds \>f vegetables from Wah Sun's gardens into his own cart. The the lot amounted to £3 14/, this included half a sack of bran. William 11. Willcocks, a man of about ol) years of ago appeared before Messrs. j. E. ('owolk and J. Caking. J.P.s, this morning on a charge of theft, at the Onehunga Police Court. He had nothin"- to say. Sergeant -J. A. Cruickshank, in askin"that he be remanded for a week! strongly opposed bail being granted to him. He said the law took a serious view of stealing out of vegetable gardens and a second offence was declared to he a crime and not punishable under summary conviction. Willcocks, who lives at Manurewa, was remanded for a >veek. He did not ask for bail.
