• AMUSEMENTS. "9 9 THE TJOHEMIAN /^RCHESTRA. HE JOOHE.MIAX v^RCHESTRA. T3IPOETAKT A NNOUNCEMENT. TO OUR SUBSCRIBERS AND PATRONS. The Management sincerely regret that they have been compelled to concel the performance of the Beethoven Concerto, by the refusal of the Town Hall authorities. to allow a requisite and suitable piano to"be taken into the Concert Hall. Earnest representations to the Town Clerk, have been peremptorily met with the statement that tho Society must use one of the two instruments installed under contract in the Town Hall. ■ Our offer to pay the customary hiring fee for the installed pinno, while using our instrument at our own expense, has been refused. The piano in tho Large Hall (even if it were suitable), is out of the question by reason of its pitch; the Boudoir Grand in the Concert Chamber is totally inadequate and' quite incapable of sustaining the solo part with Grand Orchestra. Wo are not here concerned with commercial contracts, but we recognise and appreciate the fine artistry of Mr. Cyril Towsey, a devoted and highly esteemed member of the .Orchestra, of whom the citizens, and particularly our Subscribers, have every reason to bo Justly proud; and we are not prepared, to prejudice the performance of this important work in compelling Mr. Towsey to perform on a totally unsuitable instrument, by submitting to an iniquitous regulation which, while allowing a travelling variety show to use their own property, denies similar privileges to an Auckland Society composed very largely of ratepayers, whose work during the past 12 years has been a considerable educational asset to the City (while defraying its own expenses .and contributing nearly £1000 to the-Town Hall funds). -•• We understand that the contract responeiblo for this deplorable state of- affairs in.ay be inspected, on demand, by any ratepayer nt the Town Hall. The Society's Committee trust that Mr. Towsey may have the opportunity of playing this-Concerto with us under favourable conditions in the near future. .. CONCERT TAKES PLACE ;.
