A SERIOUS NEED.
FIRE ALARMS FOR MT. EDEN. MATTER TO BE ATTENDED TO. Tlie borough of Mount Eden is a growing one. There is a splendid, block of buildings which houses the Borough Council Chambers, and nearby is tlie fire brigade station, but thero is lacking an up-to-date lire alarm system, aud the gravity of tiiis slate of affairs whs the subject of consideration at the meeting of the council last night. Sir. W. G. Latige moved: "That this council take into consideration tho advisability uf making provision in tiie next loan proposals for a sum of money sufficient to provide for tlie installation of an up-to-date fire alarm system, and that it be installed at the earliest opportunity." Speaking to liis motion, Mr. Lange stated that his reason for moving in that direction was that there had been three lircs in the district quite recently, and owing to tlie fact that there were no lire alarms much damage had resulted, lie realised that the brigade was doing good work, but lie maintained that serious delays occurred through having to telephone tlie brigade. He pointed out that telephones were not always procurable at the minute, and that it was still more difficult if it were in the early hours of tlie morning. They had good roads, a good station, a splendid engine, a line body of firemen — everything, in fact, except fire alarms. Mr. G.L.Taylor seconded the motion, and said the matter was one which demanded a thorough investigation. Jt was decided to refer tlie matter to the Eire Brigade Committee to report to the next meeting.
