RAIN IN THE CITY.
» » Steady rain Tvhich set in shortly before noon to-day delayed cargo work on the Auckland wharves and the sailings of a number of vessels in port have been postponed. The weather this morning was dull with rain threatening, but remained fine until midday, when a steady downfall commenced and continued without a break until three o'clock. During that period work on the waterfront was at a standstill. At time of going to press light rain was falling but an improvement appeared likely. The Canadian Government steamer Canadian Spinner was scheduled to leave Auckland for Wellington at 4 o'clock this afternoon, but the time of her departure for the southern port is nowindefinite. The Federal Line steamer Sussex was also delayed in the discharge of her Eastern cargo and was unable to leave for Wellington -at 3 o'clock as previously advertised. Owing to the fain, cargo operations on board the Royal mail steamer Niagara were held up for several hours. The company, however, is hopeful of dispatching the liner for Sydney at 11 o'clock to-night. She was previously timed to sail at 10 p.m.
