PRISONER RELEASED. QUEER MELBOURNE CASE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SYDNEY, September 11. Death snatched a prisoner from the hands of the Melbourne police on Monday, when it was announced in the Melbourne City Court that Thomas Wilson had succumbed to injuries in hospital.

While a mechanic from the Air Force Was walking with a girl in the Gardens on Saturday night, two men, one of whom was said to have been Wilson, approached and stated that they were police. They demanded money, and stated that if it was not forthcoming, they would arrest the mechanic. The mechanic was sceptical, and the men became enraged and attacked him. He •fought so well that they got the worst of the encounter, and made off, jumping fences and shrubberies, with the mechanic in pursuit.

He caught a man. and dragged him, struggling and kicking, to a constable on Princes Bridge. The man was placed in a cab, but he struggled Violently all the way, and then refused to give his name. He was identified, however, as Thomas Wilson, and his actions became so peculiar that the police were forced to remove him to the Melbourne Hospital, where the medical men ordered an immediate operation for cerebral irritation. His condition prevented dying depositions being taken, and he died without having given any information to the police. So that on Monday, when Thomas Wilson's name was called, there was no appearance.
