PENNY POSTAGE.
REDUCTION JUSTIFIED. _______ /■ Speaking at the opening of the new Post Office at Eastbourne, Wellington, j on Saturday, Sir James Parr (Post' | master-General) referred to the results of the penny postage system, remarking ! that w%en it was instituted the wise- j acres had shaken their heads and talked ' about the State losing money. 'When ' the rate was reduced from three halfpence to a penny there was a drop in receipts, of course, but it was only a few thousands in -many thousands of pounds of revenue. He predicted that in the course of the next few months they would have more than made up the loss, and that it would be shown that the penny was earning in the aggregate as much as the three half-penny rate did eighteen months ago.
